General: Course in Spring 2007 is given in Finnish, but the lecture material is in English.

Status:
The course is part of the Networking Technology major and is

• obligatory in the Switching and Networking Technology path and
• recommended in the Computer Networks path.

Objectives:
Topics covered by the course include

• Switch fabric architectures and implementation alternatives
• Multi-stage switch fabrics and their complexity, scalability and throughput
• PDH and ATM switches, Gbit/s-routers and optical switching elements
• Basics of WDM technology: static networks, wavelength and waveband routing as well as logically routed networks

Prerequisite: S-72.1130 Telecommunication Systems and S-38.2188 Computer networks.

Registration and info:
Obligatory registration is via WWW-TOPI. Possible changes in the course will be announced at lectures, lab's bulletin board and on this web page. Please, follow also information in the news group opinnot.sahko.s-38.tietoverkkotekniikka.

Lectures:
Lectures are given on Mondays in E111 at 9-12 and on Wednesdays in E110 at 11-14, starting on 15.1.2007. The last lecture is on 21.2.2007. Lecture material will be as a compendium via Edita. The material will also become available on this web page (see Preliminary schedule/material).

Exercises:
Exercises are held on Thursdays in I346 at 14-16. The first exercise is on 18.1.2007 and the last one on 22.2.2007. Active students can gain 0 - 6 exercise points, which are accounted when determining the grade of an exam. The extra points are valid in exams arranged in the year 2007. Additional information.

Examination:
Two exams will be organised in 2007. The first exam is on 5.3.2007 in S1 at 13-16 and the second on 9.5.2007 in S4 at 16-19. Exams will be based on the material presented in the lectures and exercises in the spring 2007. Previous exams can be found in exam archive.

An examination includes five questions and each of them gives 0 - 6 points. The grade of an exam is based on the points yielded from the exam and extra points yielded from the exercises.

Course completion:
To complete the course, one has to pass the examination.
