S-38.145 Introduction to Teletraffic Theory (2 cr)

General:

The course is given in English (mainly intended for the participants of the Master's Programme in Telecommunication) and in Finnish [kts. S-38.145 (Liikenneteorian perusteet)]. Both the courses share the same examination and exercise classes (one of the classes will be held in English).

Objective:

The course deals with traffical issues in telecommunications. More precisely, the purpose is to familiarize the participants with

• mathematical modelling of various telecommunication systems (both single resources and the whole networks) and their traffic,
• performance analysis and dimensioning of such systems (including some mathematical methods needed), and
• methods used for traffic management (and their analysis).

Prerequisites:

The participants are highly recommended to have completed course S-72.423 (Telecommunication Systems) and required to have basic knowledge on probability.

Status:

This course is obligatory for all students of the degree programme Communications Engineering, and all students with major/minor in Teletraffic Theory. In addition, it is optional for the students enrolled in the Master's Programme in Telecommunication. The course acts as an introduction to courses S-38.143 (Queueing Theory), S-38.148 (Simulation of Data Networks) and S-38.141 (Teletraffic Theory).

Obligatory enrolling is through WWW-TOPI. Possible changes in the course will be announced at the lectures, lab's bulletin board and on this page. Please, follow also the information in the news group opinnot.sahko.s-38.tietoverkkotekniikka.

Lectures:

On Mondays at 12-14 in lecture hall S3, starting on 24.1.2005. See the schedule on this page. The material presented in the lectures will be delivered as a compendium via Edita. Use the course code S-38.146 in TOPI to get the English version. The compendium used in Spring 2004 will be updated. The material will also be available on page Lectures. However, it is forbidden to print the material using the printers of the university.

Exercises:

On Thursdays at 10-11 in seminar room H402, starting on 3.2.2005. See the schedule on this page. Exercises are not obligatory. However, bonus points for the examination are available by doing homework exercises. Check page Exercises for further information and exercise material.

Examination:

The first examination will be held on 13.5.2005. There will be two retrial examinations for those who do not pass the first examination. Examination will be based both on the lectures and the exercises. No other material is required and, hence, there is no official course book either. By doing homework exercises one gets extra points for the examination.

Course completion:

To get the credits (2 cr), one has to pass the examination.
