The lectures will be mostly held in Finnish,  the exercises in English.

• Girard: Routing and dimensioning in circuit switched networks (via amazon.com): Chapters 1. and 2. This book is also available at our lab.
• C. Huitema: Routing in the Internet  (via amazon.com): Parts I and II & chapter 11. The 2nd version is recommended because it contains some new technologies, e.g., IP switching, Quality of Service, however, people can do with the older version as well. The 1st version of the book is  available at our lab.
• ATM-Forum's PNNI spex af-pnni-0055.000 (in. pdf via ATM Forum):  pages 1-46
• RFC1075: Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol
• Bruce Davie, Paul Doolan and Yakov Rekhter: Switching in IP networks (via amazon.com). This book is also availabe at our lab.

For the examination of this course you should read chapters 2, 4 and 5. Additional reading should cover chapters 7 and 8.

Schedule

Some notes:

• First lecture on September 12th (Tue) from 10 to 12am.
• First exercise on September 19th (Tue) from 8:30-10:00.
• Lectures 1-2 include routing in the circuit switched networks.
• Lectures 3-7 include routing in the internet.
• Lecture slides(in pdf-format) and mainly in Finnish except Lecture 8 also in English.

*: The slides may be modified a bit to contain more information during the course. Any modification will be announced accordingly.
 

Exercises

You can get extra points for exam from 5 exercises:

• Grades

The additional points are determined by the follwing equation:

additional_points= 0,08* percentage_of_correct_exercises -4.

 If you neglect the exercises altogether you get 4 points reduction in your exam score. To be able to start from zero you have correctly solve 50% of the exercises. The successfull completion of all exercises results you 4 additional points to the exam.

Exercise 2: Routing in the Internet. (.pdf) The answer should be submitted before 3.10. Here is the answer (.pdf)
Exercise 3: RIP and OSPF. (.pdf) The answer should be submitted before 10.10. Here is the answer (.pdf)
Exercise 4: PNNI routing. (.pdf) The answer should be submitted before 17.10. Here is the answer (.pdf)
Exercise 5: IP switching and label switching. (.pdf) The answer should be submitted before 24. 10. Here is the answer (.pdf)

You must return your answers of the basic exercises BEFORE the exercise lecture begins. For example, you should submit your answer of exercise 1 before the lecture of exercise 1 begins.

You may bring your answers to the exercise class or submit to the mailbox or send email to the assistant. The mailbox of S-38.122 is located at the corridor of 2nd floor near to G-wing.
 

• Individual Assignment (Advertisement)


There are a few individual assignments on routing available in our lab. These assignments require the knowledge contained in this course and can be regarded as the extension to this course. Each assignment may give you 1-4 credits.   There are some promising topics as follows.
 

• Study on building and modeling DiffServ networks
• Performance analysis of QoS based IP networks (simulation study by the way of using QoS Routing Simulator)
• Mechanisms for banlancing traffic over MPLS networks
• Architectural design of intra-domain & inter-domain QoS routing in DiffServ networks


If you have any interests and want to know more information, please contact Dr. Peng no later than the end of the term of Fall 2000. Note that the policy of the individual assignment falls in the scope of S-38.128.

Examination

You must registrate for the exam via topi.

The result of examination on January 10th, 2001 comes out. To check your grade, see the result file (.excel) which also explains your points got from each exercise and each question of examination.

If you find anything wrong with your grade, please contact the professor or the assistant.
