Rubber and Electronics corporation
This exercise is about simulating a corporate network. Corporation -
Rubber and Electronics - has five locations with three different personel
groups. Corporation is innovative and bases a great deal of its
operations in networked employees. Your task is to design their
network from the Cisco Systems switches and routers. Your work is
evaluated based on the following facts:
- How many various component types you use
- How scalable your design is
- What is the quality level of the applications used in the system
- How reliable is the model you created
- What is the cost of your network
Locations
- Helsinki: Head office with engineering department with 50
employee, sales department with 25 employee, administration department
with 20 employee.
- London: Sales office with 20 employee in sales and 5 in R&D
- Barcelona: Sales office with 20 employee in sales and 5 in R&D
- Frankfurt: Sales and R&D office with sales department of 20
employee and engineering department with 20 employee
- Budapest: Sales and R&D office with sales department of 25
employee and engineering department with 20 employee
You can add ICT departments to host servers in locations you want. If
you have distributed servers make sure that you realize that servers
need to be syncronized - either periodically (ones a day, hour or so)
or all the time. You need servers to cope atleast - mail, intranet,
SAP, extranet.
Communication requirements and applications
These departments have their own tasks and tools to conduct their
work. Communications services they use are:
- IP-phones Voice calls are destined each and every unit with
same probability. This is modelled by adding a voice call destination
to each office (not department). Call holding time in all of the
departments is same (exponentially distributed with mean 180 seconds),
and calls are initiated with exponentiallu distributed mean value of
20 minutes
- Video conferencing Only the Engineering department uses
Video conferencing, this is modelled to have video destination in each
research department. These calls are intra company between different
research departments. Frequency of calls is one call per client during
the simulation. Call holding time is 15 minutes.
- SAP SAP is used by the administration and sales
departments. SAP is modelled as database service with following
characteristics:
- Transaction Mix (Queries/Total Transactions): 100%
- Transaction Interarrival Time: exponential (30)
- Transaction Size (bytes): constant (512)
- Symbolic Server Name: Database Server
-
- Duration: End of profile
- Inter-repetition Time (seconds): exponential (300)
- Number of Repetitions: Unlimited
- Repetition Pattern: Serial
- Intranet Intranet services are used by all user
groups. These services are modelled by using demand models.
- Duration
- Start time: poisson (150)
- End time: exponential (3600)
- Request parameters
- Size (bytes): exponential (512)
- Rate (Requests per hour): exponential (120)
- Response parameters
- Size (bytes): normal (40000,20000)
- Extranet Extranet services are used by all user
groups. These services are modelled by using demand models.
- Duration
- Start time: poisson (150)
- End time: exponential (3600)
- Request parameters
- Size (bytes): exponential (512)
- Rate (Requests per hour): exponential (120)
- Response parameters
- Size (bytes): normal (30000,20000)
- Email Email is used by all user groups. These services are
modelled by using demand models.
- Duration
- Start time: poisson (150)
- End time: exponential (3600)
- Request parameters
- Size (bytes): normal (4000,2000)
- Rate (Requests per hour): exponential (20)
- Response parameters
- Size (bytes): normal (4000,2000)
with demand models set atleast 85% to be background (analytical) and
rest to be packet level simulation.
Components
Components which are required to do this task are:
- Node Models
- Ethernet workstation advanced
- Ethernet server advanced
- Ethernet LAN advanced
- Cisco routers and switches
- Link models
- 10BaseT
- 100BaseT
- 1000BaseX
- ATM E1
- ATM E3
- ATM OC3
- FrameRelay E1
- FrameRelay E3
- PPP E1
- PPP E3
- PPP SoNet OC3
- or any other link which you may want to use
The way you model the network is your choice. LAN model is somewhat
faster in simulation but does not produce as accurate results as the
per component model.
Rating of the exercise
All submission with functional network design pass the course. Rating
after that is based on the money you spent in network: a) design
b) operation costs.
- Cheapest submission together with other submissions in range of
10% of the cheapest get grade 5
- 10 to 20% from the cheapest get grade 4
- 20 to 30% from the cheapest get grade 3
- 30 to 40% from the cheapest get grade 2
- More than 40% from the cheapest get grade 1
General remarks
You should have done tutorials in order to cope with this
exercise. Information on traffic models can be found from the
documentation. Design your network before simulation to minimize your
time in computers. Simulation time of single iteration is roughly 30
minutes. Simulate atleast 15 minutes simulations.
Reporting
Generate report which shows your design and decissions that you made
(location of servers). Show that your design is able to maintain
quality level of applications used in the company. Report should
contain monetary evaluation of network expenses for time period of
three years. You can
- Paper to course locker in G2 wing
- email PDF-version of the report to me
- use web based reporting module and generate www-pages
software
You can have ITGuru on your home PC if your PC runs any of following
OS:
- Windows NT4.0 with Service Pack 3, 5, or 6a. SP 4 and 6 are not
supported
- Windows 2000; Service Packs 1 and 2 are supported but not required
- Windows XP with Service Pack 1
Additional requirements are 256MB RAM, 200MB HD (Additional 200MB
during installation), and 1024x768 / 256 colors display (minimum)
CDROMs can be fetched from the laboratory and must be returned within
a day. Succesfull installation requires that you register in opnet
www-site. Fill in the form with your name, email, school etc. For
the course name put Network Service Provisioning and instructor Marko
Luoma. After the registration you will get email containing username
and password to the download site and license server. Download site
contains a step-by-step instructions for the license management.
