S-38.130 Postgraduate Course in Telecommunications Technology (P)

Course Topic: In Fall 1997, the course will deal with Multirate Loss Systems. Multirate loss systems represent a new area of research which has become important with the advent of multiservice integrated networks, where the capacity reserved for a connection may vary from one connection to another. Notably ATM represents such a system but the models may also be applied to the analysis of other systems where capacity is reserved, such as the RSVP protocol in the Internet. The course aims at giving a firm foundation showing how classical results relating to single traffic class can be extended to the multirate setting and a good understanding of the most important methods for the performance analysis of such networks. The course will cover topics such as calculation of blocking probabilities, call admission control (CAC), routing, optimization and simulation of multirate loss systems.

Status of the course: The present course can be included in postgraduate studies on Telecommunications Technology (major or minor in S38). The credits can also be included in graduate studies on telecommunications technology.

To whom: The course is primarily meant for postgraduate students of telecommunications technology having an interest in understanding the performance analysis and dimensioning of multirate circuit switched networks.

Course completion: The course will be arranged as a seminar. Each participant will (a) give a presentation on the selected subject, (b) hand out 2 homework exercises in the subject, (c) present the solutions to these exercises, (d) examine the solutions to these exercises by the others, and (e) do the homeworks given by others. Presence in seminar sessions is required (at least 8 times) and at least 11 of the homework exercises must be done to complete the course. Finally, (f) an examination arranged at the end of the seminar on the covered material must be passed.

The presentations need not be accompanied by a fully written report. It is, however, essential that the presentations are well prepared and supported by high quality overhead material (clear handwriting allowed) that is distributed as handouts to others. The main emphasis should be in clarity and understandability. The handouts should give a self-contained exposition on the subject, especially in areas based on material outside the main textbook [1].

Organisation: The first meeting of the course will be held on Monday 15.9.1997 at 14 in room H402 of the Department of Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering. Then, from 29.9. on the seminars followed by the exercise class will be held weekly on Mondays 14-18 in room H402. See for a more detailed schedule here.

Study Credits: This course will be worth of 4 credit points. Additionally, 2 extra points, i.e. 6 points in total, can be gained by giving another presentation and taking care of the associated exercises. Evaluation with the usual marks (1-5) will based on:

		Presentation 1/3
		Exercises 1/3
		Examination 1/3
