Notes about the course material (by Prof. Kantola)

We will have lecture notes that will cover telephony signaling fundamentals and signaling systems in circuit switched networks. I addition you should get Gonzalo's book on 3G IMS. The slideset that is used on lectures is just to accompany the oral lecture. They will not be sufficient to really learn the subject matter probably even if you attend the lecture. This is proven by poor grades during previous years.

Usually, the most precise sources on signaling are the original sources, i.e. the specifications. You should not be afraid to pull them from the Internet (3G or IETF) or from elsewhere. As a rule, you do not need to read the fine print in the specifications, reading just the general sections and scanning the rest will be enough to gain the level of understanding expected on this course. Some may find that the books are easier to read. Fine, you can use them also. Nevertheless, a networking specialist (I hope you intend to be one at some point) is able to work with specifications, so you might as well start getting used to reading them on this course.

To successfully negotiate the course you MUST work with the material during the course. If you leave it until a few days before the exam, most likely you will fail the exam. This is a historical fact.
