S-38.130 Licentiate course on Telecommunications Technology (4 cr.)
Course Topic Spring 2001: IP Telephony
The course aims to cover the architectural issues, latest proposals, current
research issues and future of the IP Telephony and IP Voice.
The course will based based on the book "IP Telephony Packet based
multimedia communications systems" by Olivier Hersent, David Gurle and
Jean-Pierre Petit but additional material will be used as well.
The course can be included in post-graduate studies on Telecommunications
Technology (major or minor in S38). The credits can also be included in
graduate studies on telecommunications technology (Networking Technology
is the new name that will be adopted from next term in both post-graduate
and graduate studies).
The course is primarily meant for post-graduate students of telecommunications
technology having a special interest in understanding the future of voice
networks. Graduate students may also join the seminar.
To keep the course manageable participation will be limited.

Course completion
The course will be arranged as a seminar. Seminar language will be English.
Each participant will give a presentation on his/her subject from the material.
Each student will report his/her subject in a seminar paper and will act
as an opponent to two presentations.

The presentations need to be in the form of a properly written article.

Each presenter has to prepare good enough overhead material to support
the presentation.

The papers should be written and presentations should be held in English.

For each presentation one or two participants will act as opponents.
Each participant will choose a subject from the candidated
topics according to his/her interests and consult the course
assistant about his/her preference. The participant may also reserve/suggest
his/her own presentation topic. Your comments and suggestions towards improving
the seminar are also welcome.
If an adequate amount of high-standard papers emerge they will be
published in the Laboratory of Telecommunications Series. This may require
additional work on the paper!
Note: Depending on the final scope of the seminar based on the number
of participants and the quality of the individual papers, we may also increase
the number of credits for the course to correspond the amout of work done.
Organisation
The first meeting of the course will be held on Feb. 5th, at 15:00 - 17:00
in lecture hall S5. In this event the first introductory
lecture was be given and the seminar subjects were dealt out. The
presentations will be held on a seminar weekend on April 6th
and 7th. Mondays from 15 - 1600 are onsultation hours
on topics with the professor as needed. The examination is arranged
in May 16th at 13:00-16:00 o'clock in S3.

Credits
The course will produce 4 credits: 3 credits for the seminar paper, presentation,
opponeering and active participation; 1 credit for the examination. Participation
requirement will be 70%.
