CGI - Common Gateway Interface The common gateway interface in an interface specification that lets HTTP servers run other programs on the server machine in a platform-independent manner. The CGI is the major driving force behind many of interactive features on the web pages. Domain name A unique www-address for an individual, organization or a company. The address points to a specific server on the Internet. In Finland the authority responsible for maintaining domain names is Telecommunications Administration Centre. Globally the authority for top level domain name registration is InterNic Registration Services. FTP - File Transfer Protocol FTP is the most used protocol for file transferring over the Internet and other TCP/IP based networks. FTP was first invented in the Massachusettes Institute of Technology in 1971 and it was updated in the middle 1980's to pretty much the state it is in today. HTML - Hypertext Markup Language A device independent markup language based on SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). HTML is used to create www-pages in a way that the appearance is separated from the content. HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol The primary protocol of the Internet at the moment. This protocol is used to transfer web pages over the Internet. ISP - Internet Service Provider A company which offers its customers access to the Internet as well as various member services (for example news feeds, Internet gaming abilities, Internet relay chat services). SSI - Server Side Includes Special tags on HTML pages which are automatically updated upon the web page retrieval. These SSI tags simplify building a whole web page from several different parts. SSL - Secure Socket Layer This protocol crypts the contents of the service during travel across the Internet. All information sent and recieved are crypted so that it is almost impossible to decrypt the information and thus it is safely transported. TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol TCP/IP is the protocol used for Internet traffic from one computer to the other. TCP/IP is also used on some company networks. Top level domain name All domain names are categorized in top level domain name classes such as: .com, .org, .net, .gov, .edu and the country abbreviations URL - Uniform Resource Locator An address which points to a specific Internet server. WWW - World Wide Web Definition 1: Universe of hypertext servers which allow text, graphics, sound files etc. mixed together. Definition 2: All the resources that can be accessed using gopher, ftp, http, telnet, usenet, wais and some other tools. |
