Is your company trying
to get a presence on the Internet?
Are you?

Anyone from around the world can get to know you and your business, email you or even talk with you by just typing something as simple as http://www.domain.fi/. On these pages we are going to introduce a new term to you: webhosting. We will tell you exactly how you can get your own homepage on the Internet and also we will provide a comparison of what you should consider when selecting an internet service provider (ISP).

What is webhosting?

Webhosting, to put it simply, is to get an account from an ISP and get your homepage and related files saved on the ISP's server. The service provider will allow you to have an address like www.domain.fi to point to their server so that each time somebody types your URL they are automatically directed to your ISP's server to retrieve the file you want.

Where does one get webhosting services?

Webhosting services in Finland began in 1995 when the software technology became available. For an individual, the first places to ask for webhosting will be schools and communities. They have special services for their students or residents. For example, in Finland, at Helsinki University of Technology, students will be given a possibility to maintain their own homepage, at no extra cost. Usually services provided by schools are free to the students. There are also ISPs that will maintain your homepage on their server for a certain fee.

For organizations who want to get their own homepage, they can either have their page located under the ISP's domain (for example http://www.isp.fi/company/) or apply for a domain name and have their own, unique Internet address. Getting your own domain name costs more and you should consider if you really want a unique Internet address.

The domain - the address

The domain name is the Internet address that a company has for distinguishing one company from another. The domain name consists of three parts separated with dots. Let us take an example: www.hut.fi. The last part, fi, is the top level domain name on the Internet meaning Finland. This part of the name defines a country (such as fi for Finland, uk for United Kingdom or se for Sweden) or the characteristics of an organisation (such as com for companies, org for non-profit organizations or gov for United States government sites). The second level of the domain name, hut, is the official name of the organization's or a firm's business name (such as IBM, Lotus or Nokia). The third part or the domain name refers to a computer in the domain (such as www for World Wide Web server or ftp for File Transfer Protocol server). There can also be a fourth and a fifth part (or even more) to the domain name distinguishing between the companies branches or locations (for example www.europe.datafellows.com or www.software.ibm.com). The main idea is to keep the name descriptive and easy to remember.

Domains in Finland

In Finland domain names are only for registered organisations. No individual will be given a domain name /1/. The authority that maintains the domain names in Finland is Telecommunications Administration Centre. Their job is to ensure that the domain being applied for isn't used by someone else and also that it will not restrict another applicants possibilities to get a suitable domain name. The cost of registering a .fi-level domain name is 320mk and the annual fee for TAC administering is 60mk. /2/.

Domains worldwide

The top level domains .com, .org and .net are maintained by InterNic registration services. The use of these domains isn't controlled as strictly. As a result almost anyone, even a private person, can get their own domain ending with .com, .org or .net for a price. The cost of registering a domain name with Internic is $70.00 USD as of April 1st, 1998 /3/.
