4.2 SEARCH OF OBSCURE, UNUSUAL AND POPULAR TERMS

The size of index doesn’t mean better results. Many examinations have been done about how different search engines find obscure, unusual and popular terms but none of those can make reliable conclusions which search engine is the best for different terms. Generally saying, searching obscure and unusual terms Google has been proved to be the best possibility. It has the largest index, so the possibility to find information on obscure and unusual terms is better because of better coverage of the web. But when searching really popular terms, Google have seen big problems to find relevant information. Google suggests that for searches involving popular terms, it may not dig into its full index but rather only among a collection of what it considers the most popular documents. Generally in searching popular terms, Altavista and FAST are propably the most usuful search engines. When searching under fi-domain or in finnish, Ihmemaa gives the best results with all kind of searches. It has designed to work with finnish language and offer features that worldwide search engines don’t have.
