4.1 SIZE OF INDEX AND DIRECTORY

Size of index is one of the most important measure to compare search engines. Although large index doesn’t mean better search results, still more likely the search engine will be a comprehensive record of the web because the larger index cover more of the web, and users have then better chance to find information what they are looking for. At this moment Google has clearly the world’s largest index, more than a billion indexed web pages. The reason for enormous growth of indexes is the listings to other search engines. Yahoo and Google co-operate and use others listings as a secondary source to find information. Ihmemaa index only fi-domains and is meant to use to find information which is written in finnish or is under fi-domain, so it’s obvious that is has much smaller index than its worldwide competitors.

Amount of search engines’ links is a measure of directory’s size. They help users to find sites faster through the different pre-determined categories. Categories have often many subcategories which lead user to links. Links are essential part of search engines’ functionality because they have noticed to be very important way for users to find new and popular web pages. Yahoo and Google have huge amount of links, around 2 million, while Ihmemaa mainly offer links to finnish web sites, so its amount of links is naturally much smaller.
