Technological and Economical Limitations

The GPS technology is well studied and well understood just like GSM. There should not be any big limitations which would not allow to build such a hybrid device. The GPS is more over a passive in a sense that it only receives signal, but it does not have to transmit (transmission is the main limiting factor in battery life of the mobile device). So it will not increase the power consumption too much. However this is only an ideal situation. For example the standby-time for Benefon's Esc! dropped remarkably from it's original position after turning on the GPS technology. This is partly because of the need to update the map constantly to follow movements of the target.

GPS mobile solutions already exist today with a reasonable low price. That means that the economical limitations could be bearded mainly in offered services and their misuse. To have a precise locator in your pocket which is able to send your precise position (3-10 meters) to anyone who knows the right wires which have to be pulled, is deathly dangerous. This will probably cause a heavy limitation on offered services and will create new type of security matters creating new cost limits etc.
