S-38.030 Postgraduate Course on Networking Technology
Requisites
To successfully pass the course and achieve 3 credits, you should:
- Write a paper on a subject, that is totaling in approximately two-coloumn,
single-spaced
around 10 pages according
to the styleguide. The content of the
paper
is strictly supervised. Paper grading will be done based on quality,
not
on the quantity!
- Give a presentation (25-30 minutes + 15-20 minutes for discussion
= 45
minutes) for your paper. Length of presentations will be adjusted
depending
on the number of students.
- Act as an opponent to one of the presentations. The presenter
will
provide
you with his/her paper in advance. You will need to prepare several
questions
and your duty in this presentation is to keep the discussion alive and
make the questions clear. You should send your questions and model
solutions
to Prof. Kantola at
least one day before the presentation begins. You
will also need to grade the presentation and the paper. The grading
form
may be obtained from here in .pdf format.
This
form is to be used only by the opponent.
You are required to deliver your paper in electronic format: preferably
in PDF or MS Word documents to Prof. Kantola and the course assistant. The
delivery of the paper to the opponent remains to be separately
negotiated between the opponent and you.
Your paper should cover its topic from the following viewpoints:
- Introduction (10%)
- Problem and motivation
- The solution, protocol or architecture that is proposed
- Evaluation of the solution based on simulation results, prototype
experience
reports, own tests or simulations, penetration among users etc.
Criteria
for evaluation include complexity, performance, scalability, stability,
QoS impact etc.
- Standardisation and Availability status: RFCs, Drafts, maturity
and
availability
of the solution (open source, commercial implementations)
- Application of the solution so far and future potential,
applicability
of the solution in other areas
- Conclusions and reality check (10%)
Note, you may not be limited within the above viewpoints. Try to
cover
any valuable viewpoints which will enrich your paper.
Grading
Your final grade will be determined by Prof. Kantola based on:
- The opponents grading of your paper and presentation. Grading
form
available here
in .pdf format.
- Prof. Kantola's grading of your paper and presentation in a
following
manner:
- Written Report 55%
- Original Contribution 15%
- Clarity of presentation 15%
- Response to questions 15%
Note!!: To even qualify for grading you need to participate in
lectures
and presentations.
