Course Topic Fall 1999:Differentiated Services in the Internet
Building on the Spring course on QoS in the Internet, this course aims to cover the architectural issues, latest proposals, current research issues and future of the concept of Differentiated Services in the Internet. We will study a recently written book on the subject and have the privilege to enjoy the author, Dr. Kalevi Kilkki, giving introductory lectures on the material, see also the schedule for further details.
The course is primarily meant for post-graduate students of telecommunications technology having a special interest in understanding the Internet and Quality of Service (QoS).
As of 11.10.1999 the course is full, however you may wish to request runner-up places in case one of the students already signed in should cancel his/her participation.
There will be no possibility to participate in the course dissemination without contributing to the course.
Organisation
The course will be arranged as a seminar. Seminar language will be English. The first meeting will be held on October 8th, place and time to be announced later. In the first meeting the seminar subjects will be dealt out. The actual dissemination of the material will be arranged on separate seminar weekend, most probably on November 28th (Sunday) and 29th (Monday). Please, see the schedule for further details.
Course requirements
To complete the course the student has to fill out the following requirements:
- Each student will write a seminar paper on his/her subject. The paper needs to be in the form of a properly written scientific article.
- Each student will give a presentation based on his/her paper. Each presenter has to prepare good enough overhead material to support the presentation.
- Each student has to act as an opponent to presentation.
- Each student will prepare four (4) exercises and answers to them based on the student's topic (this means short mathematical exercises, simulation exercises, network design exercises etc.)
If an adequate amount of high-standard papers emerge they will be published in the Laboratory of Telecommunications Series. This may require additional work on the paper. Be prepared!!
Credits
The course will produce 4 credits for the seminar paper, presentation, opponeering, participation in the dissemination and preparation of the exercises. A final examination will also be arranged and needs to be passed to obtin the credits.
