S-38.130 Licenciate course on Telecommunications Technology

Course Topic Fall 1998: Internet Technology School.
The course covers research results, the technology and its impact to products and markets.
Status of the course: Licentiate course on Telecommunications Technology can be included in post-graduate studies on Telecommunications Technology (major or minor in S38). The credits can also be included in graduate studies on telecommunications technology.
To whom: The course is primarily meant for post-graduate students of telecommunications technology having a special interest in understanding the Internet and Internet/ISDN/GSM convergence with a background in software and possibly in PSTN/ISDN/GSM. Fall 1998 course is arranged in co-operation with Nokia Telecommunications. To keep the course manageable participation will be limited.
Course completion: The course will be arranged as a seminar. Each participant will give a presentation on his/her subject from the material. Groups of two participants/subject are preferred. Each group will report its subject in a seminar paper.
- The presentations need to be in the form of a properly written article.
- Each presenter has to prepare good enough overhead material to support his/her presentation.
- The presentations will be written in English.
- Seminar language will be Finnish. Use of English is not entirely forbidden. :-)
- For each presentation two participants will act as opponents by asking questions and suggesting grades for the seminar paper.
- Each participant will suggest a grade for the presentation.
- The group will prepare examination questions for its topic. Questions and model answers will be given to prof. Kantola.
Organisation: The first meeting of the course will be held on Monday 14.9.1998 at 15.00 in Pitäjanmaki, Taitotalo Auditorium, Valimotie 8, where the seminar subjects will be dealt out. The seminars will be held weekly on Mondays from 15.00 until 17.45 with a short break in the middle.
Credits: The course will produce 2 credits for the seminar paper, presentation, opponeering and participation. Participation requirement will be 70%. Examination will produce three additional credit units.
Examination is held 18.1.1999 15-18.
Place: Lecture Hall S4, Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering, Otakaari 5 A.
