Signaling Protocols is a new course and will be lectured for the first time in the Spring of 2003.
This course replaces S-38.120 Telecommunication Switching Technology. Lectures and exercises are given in English.

The course is one of the core courses in the Networking major and is also part of the Master's programme in Telecommunications. It is also useful to those who want to understand how to design services that rely on the underlying signaling infrastructure in the network.

Content
Signaling in telecommunications and data networks, e.g. telephone network and GSM-networks, VoIP in wireline and 3G networks.  The course covers signaling and related mechanisms on a functional level as well as describes the systems and the contexts where the signaling systems are used. Focus is on layer 3 in OSI terms. Also lower layers are discussed to an extent. In IP networks signaling is an application on the basic IP infrastructure. Therefore, from the basic IP infrastructure point of view we are dealing with applications that do signaling or are directly related to signaling.

Prerequisites

S-72.423 Telecommunication Systems or corresponding knowledge (e.g. T-110.300 for CS students), S38.188 Computer networks or T-110.350 (mainly for CS students).

Enrolling

Obligatory enrolling has to be done by using WWW-TOPI. If you do not have access to WWWTopi, please contact the HUT computing centre. If you still can not enroll via WWWTopi send your HUT study id, name and department to the course assistant.

Exercise Routine

The successful passing of the course requires the application of theoretical and practical skills presented in the lectures. The student should return the exercises so that they can be graded.Student can get +2---+4 additional points to the examination.
Totally, there will be 5 exercises:
  1) 3 calculation exercises (E1,E2, E5 ---- 12 questions )
If   7  of 12  questions have been correctly solved, students will be rewarded +1p
12 of 12 questions have been correctly solved, students will be rewarded +2p

  2) 2 practical exercises ( E3 & E4)

Exercise3(LME):   100 selection questions based on the CAL-manuals of the LM Ericsson Signalling Software

If 70% questions have been correctly solved, students will be rewarded +1p

The 2 persons’ group may be formed freely and the members may reserve time on the computers in 2 hour pieces up to 4 hours at any one time and up to 10 hours in total time.

Exercise4(SIP):    SIP signalling message collecting and analysis based on the SIP test centre

If 70% questions have been correctly solved, students will be rewarded +1p

The 2 persons’ group may be formed freely and students are assumed to have their own computers to do the exercise.

The participation to the exercise lectures is not obligatory, although it is recommended. To be able to take the course it is required that student should get at least +2p.

The exercises should be returned before the start of the exercise lecture to the box with the course code (s-38.115) marked under the laboratory notice board on G-wing 2nd floor. Return of the exercises via email is also accepted, although the student himself is responsible for the timely delivery of the exercise answers. Each student should submit his or her own copy of individual exercise answers.

Course Schedule

Lectures cover the following topics

Schedule is under construction NOW. Details will change during the term especially concerning the VOIP related issues. Also timing may and will change as we go. Also other stuff is under construction. Lecture Notes will be published in several chuncks during the semester.
