Objectives
The main objective of the project is to measure, model, and analyze
mobile Internet usage patterns and associated business models. The
construction of both quantitative and qualitative models aims to
enhance academic and industry understanding on the converging mobile
industry. The focus of the project is primarily on consumers.
The following data collection methods are utilized are in collaboration
with industry partners:
1. Handset-based monitoring of mobile end-users
2. Surveys of smartphonone panel participants
3. Mobile network IP traffic measurements
4. Mobile operator subscriber databases
5. Expert interviews
The four more technical measurements methods above (methods 1
– 4) are not often available to academic researchers. Thus,
the methods are applied among the first academic institutions in the
world. Instead of purely explorative research, the project attempts to
first identify relevant research questions and then answer them
holistically by collecting and analyzing comprehensive research data.
Triangulation by using multiple research methods is applied in solving
particular research problems.
Extensive international research collaboration is also an objective of
the project. The collaboration already started with international
universities (MIT, USA; KTH, Sweden; University of Athens, Greece;
Management Institute, India) is continued, whereas new collaboration
with selected other universities (e.g. WASEDA, Japan) will be
initiated. Several research papers are to be coauthored with foreign
collaborators.
Research results are published in various academic forums. In addition
to academic publications, several master’s theses (3-4 theses
/ year) and doctoral dissertations (2-3) will be completed during the
project. Furthermore, relevant research results are also communicated
within the Finnish mobile industry by organizing seminars, press
conferences, and company-specific briefings. Overall, the project
demonstrates a successful collaboration between a divergent set of
mobile industry actors.
