Introduction to Voice over IP

A number of "prototype" products have been suggested for transferring voice over the Internet. Services based on voice over the Internet are being launched and are a very hot business issue at the moment. The reason is that calls in Internet follow the usual Internet billing model, i.e. the price is distance independent. Many operators see this as a big threat to their International and long distance call traffic.

Voice services in the Internet are however in an embryonic state - voice may be simplex like in radio communications before NMT, interoperability with ISDN/PSTN is poor or non-existent etc. The Voice over IP Forum has been formed to prepare standards for IP-voice networking.
