Cross-Layer Optimisation of Wireless Networks (CLOWN)

Cross-Layer Optimisation of Wireless Networks (CLOWN) is a 2-year research project at the Department of Communications and Networking in TKK. The project started in May 2006 and it is funded by Tekes - Finnish funding agency for technology and innovation.

The main objectives of the project are:

• Gaining comprehensive understanding on cross-layer optimisation of wireless network resources and on the problems related to cross-layer co-operation and control mechanism interactions between the different layers.
• Applying flow-level models to obtain a novel approach for analysing the performance of cross-layer mechanisms. Flow-level models are able to capture how an individual user experiences the Quality of Service (QoS). The research group has a strong background in applying the models.
• Developing heuristic and distributed algorithms that serve as fundamental building blocks enabling cross-layer optimisation in practical wireless networks.
