Note!

Communication Networking: An Analytical Approach

Topic: In Fall 2007, the course is based on the recent book:

    A. Kumar, D. Manjunath, and J. Kuri 
    Communication Networking: An Analytical Approach
    Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, 2004
    ISBN: 0-12-428751-4
The aim is to cover at least Part I of the book dealing with Multiplexing. The course is largely based on self-studying of the material with emphasis on the exercises.

Status: The present course can be included in postgraduate studies on Teletraffic Theory.

To whom: The course is primarily meant for postgraduate students of teletraffic theory having an interest in understanding the performance analysis and dimensioning of communication networks.

Prerequisites: S-38.3143 [S-38.143] (Queueing Theory) and S-38.3141 [S-38.141] (Teletraffic Theory) recommended.

Language: The working language is English.

Organisation: The course will be arranged as a seminar (meetings once per week) in study period II. However, the start-up meeting is already on In this start-up meeting, each participant will be given the part of the book that he/she is responsible for, typically one half of a chapter. The students shall choose their own homework exercises by after which the exercises will be announced to the other participants. From on, the seminar sessions will be held weekly on Mondays 16-19 in the same room E110. In these sessions, each participant shall give a short introductory lesson (about 15 min) on the topic he/she is responsible for. After that, he/she will show the solutions of the related homework exercises. It is assumed that each participant has self-studied the topic and done the related homework exercises beforehand. Examination: After the seminar sessions, an examination will be arranged on

The examination is based on the chapters of the textbook that have been studied during the seminar.

Completion: To pass the course, each participant shall

  1. be present at all the seminar sessions,
  2. prepare and give an introductory lesson about his/her topic,
  3. prepare and show the solutions to his/her own homework exercises,
  4. read and grade the solutions given by the other participants to his/her own homework exercises,
  5. solve the homework exercises given by the other participants (at least up to 50%), and
  6. pass the examination.

Credits: This course will be worth of 7 ECTS credits.

Grading: The grading with the usual marks (1-5) will be based on:

    Homework exercises: 50%
    Examination:        50%

Entry: Preferred way to inform about participation is through WWW-TOPI, which is available for all students having a license to the university computers. Another way is to send an email to samuli.aalto@tkk.fi. Because of the limited number of sessions, the number of participants will be limited up to 12.
