Topics for S-38.4030 Postgraduate Course on Networking Technology

General instructions

Avoid overlap

Course personnel acknowledges that students taking this course probably do not initially know that much about carrier grade ethernet. Be that as it may, we do not wish to see all presentations beginning with "a quick 15-slide introduction to carrier ethernet technology".

Work together, form networks with colleagues

To avoid unnnecessary overlap every participant should know what others are doing. Communicate, participate, contribute and educate your fellow students so that you all know what you are doing and you may avoid overlap in content. This will most probably improve your chances in producing a quality paper for conference submission.

Tentative list of topics

Each participant will choose/suggest a subject from the list of topics according to his/her interests and consult the course assistant about his/her preference. Final assignment of topics will be organized on the first meeting of the seminar.

Below you'll find topic suggestions, works and material that deal with the course topics. Students are required to participate in and attend to both tracks. However, seminar paper is required only on one topic in either track.

Please note, that there might be small changes to the topic list before the firs meeting on September 28th.

Suggestions for topics in Track 1: Carrier grade Ethernet

MEFs may found here.

Update on 28.9.2007: Striken topic areas are initially reserved. See assignments here.

  1. Overview on Metro Ethernet
  2. Architectural issues of Metro Ethernet
  3. Network management model and elements
  4. Implementing network management
  5. Introduction to new Ethernet extensions
  6. Resiliency in Carrier Grade Ethernet
  7. Metro Ethernet Services - Introduction
  8. Circuit Emulation Service in Metro Ethernet

Suggestions for topics in Track 2: Future Internet

IRTF web pages here. The idea of this track is to dig into the work of a IRTF group. The work should present an in-depth and detailed review on the topic together with suggestions for future directions. An exemplary paper rises above the IRTF frame of reference and suggests solutions and approaches "outside the IP box".

Update on 28.9.2007: Striken topic areas are initially reserved. See assignments here.

  1. Network management
  2. Routing
  3. Multicast
  4. Internet architecture
  5. Host Identity Protocol
  6. Distributed environments for networking research - Search for software platforms
