S-38.4030 Postgraduate Course on Networking Technology - Spring 2007
Requisites
To successfully pass the course and achieve 5-8 ECTS, you should:
- Form/be assigned a topic from the topic list.
- Report your subject in a seminar paper. Each participant will give a presentation on his/her subject based on his/her paper and will act as an reviewer/opponent to one paper/presentation. The role of reviewer is suggest improvements to the paper whereas the role of the opponent in the seminar is to keep the discussion alive and professional.
- Write a paper on a subject, that is totaling in approximately two-column,
single-spaced around 6-10 pages . The content of the paper is strictly supervised. Paper grading will be done based on quality,
not on the quantity!
- Note on the method of working when writing the paper: It is strongly suggested to work in groups when arranging your thoughts and figuring out what the papers are all about. The group process should be commented in the paper in a section titled "Acknowledgements": Mention at least the persons with whom you discussed and who were the ones that aided you to improve your understanding on the topic, the quality of your paper etc..
- Give a presentation (20-30 minutes + 15-20 minutes for discussion
= 35-50 minutes) for your paper.
- Act as an reviewer for one paper. Everyone will be assigned a paper to review. A reviewer should comment and suggest improvements on the content.
- Act as an opponent to one of the presentations. The presenter
will provide you with his/her paper in advance. You will need to prepare several
questions and your duty in this presentation is to keep the discussion alive and
make the questions clear.
- Provide a brief summary and evaluation on each paper at the seminar. The summaries and evaluations are to be returned at the end of the seminar day.
You are required to deliver your paper in electronic format: preferably
in PDF documents to Prof. Kantola , the course assistant and to your assigned reviewer/opponent. The
delivery of the paper to the opponent remains to be separately
negotiated between the opponent and you.
Your paper should cover its topic from the following viewpoints:
- Introduction (10%)
- Problem and motivation
- The solution, protocol or architecture that is proposed
- Evaluation of the solution based on simulation results, prototype
experience reports, own tests or simulations, etc. Criteria
for evaluation include complexity, performance, scalability, stability,
QoS impact etc.
- Standardisation and Availability status: RFCs, Drafts, maturity
and availability of the solution (open source, commercial implementations)
- Application of the solution so far and future potential,
applicability of the solution in other areas
- Conclusions and reality check (10%)
Note, you may not be limited within the above viewpoints. Try to
cover
any valuable viewpoints which will enrich your paper.
Grading
Note!!: To even qualify for grading you need to participate in
the seminar day(s).
Your final grade will be determined by Prof. Kantola based on:
- The opponents and participants grading/evaluation of your paper and presentation.
- Prof. Kantola's grading of your paper and presentation with the following details in mind:
- Written report quality
- Clarity of written and oral presentation
- Response to questions
