The later seminar date is changed, so the current seminar dates are

The first seminar session (25.4.) will be held in Dipoli (hall 24).
Opening seminar on Feb 6th at 15.15 in SE220.
Participation is limited.
Introduction
The course aims discuss a number of Ph.D thesis on Networking Technology
(or Computer Networks) written in many Universities mainly over the past
5 years. The purpose is to analyse and understand the methodology, the
subject matter in the thesis. Providing insight to the level of theses
in different parts of the world is a bonus. For the seminar to be a useful
learning experience it is preferrable that a wide selection of methodologies
and topics in high quality theses will be covered in order to provide a
broad picture of modern research on networking technology.
Each participant will read one thesis well and make a presentation.
He or she will also act as an opponent to two other speakers, so each student
will read two other theses at least to the point of being capable of contributing
to the discussion of the thesis. Each student will have a tutor from the
members of staff of the Networking Laboratory for discussing the theses
prior to the seminar.
The course can be included in post-graduate studies on Networking Technology
(major or minor in S38). The credits can also be included in graduate studies
on Networking Technology.
The course is primarily meant for post-graduate students of networking
technology having an interest in graduating one day with a doctoral degree.
(Graduate students may also join the seminar).
Course completion
The course will be arranged as a seminar. Seminar language will be English.
Each participant will give a presentation on his/her subject. Each student
will write an evaluation of the thesis, he/she presented as if he/she acted
as an the opponent to the author of the thesis. Each student will act as
an opponent to two presentations.
Each participant will suggest/choose a subject to/from the list
of candidate theses according to his/her interests and consult
one of the tutors about his/her preference.
It is recommended that students make their own suggestions on the thesis
they wish to study. The participant may also select one of the theses on
the list produced by the tutors. If you have at least a vague idea
on the area in which you may write your own thesis one day, this is the
opportunity to study other people's work in the same area. Your comments
and suggestions towards improving the seminar are also welcome.
Registration
You can register to the course by sending e-mail to the course assistant
(kjniemin@netlab.hut.fi).
Registration will be held open until Feb 4th. If more people register than
the course can take, prof Kantola will select the participants based on
the progress of the students in their post graduate studies on networking
technology so far.
Schedule
Course Seminar will be held 25.4.2003 and 15.5.2003
as a two day intensive session. The first seminar session (25.4.) will be held
in Dipoli (hall 24).
You have to return your evaluating papers on Wednesday 16.4. at 15
o'clock at latest. Return your papers to your tutor, opponent and course
assistant via email. You may still continue to make enhancements to your
evaluation.
The DL for delivering your presentation slides to your opponent and
course assistant is two days before your presentation. Please print/copy and
deliver your slides for all participants before your presentation.
The first meeting of the course will be held on 6.2.2002, at 15:15 -
17:00 in labratory meeting room SE220.
The purpose of the first meeting is to finalise all work assignments and
clarify any points that may rise.
Credits
The course will produce 3 credits. Two credit units are based on your presentation
and analysis of a thesis in your evaluation statement. One credit unit
is based on your contribution as an opponent to two other theses presenters.
Presentations and thesis evaluation
In your presentation you will discuss the following:
-
Way of presentation of the material in the thesis. Does it meet the normal
academic criteria. Language - can you point any mistakes.
-
Research problem. Is it/are they well defined? Is it/are they well motivated?
-
Methodology adopted in the thesis. Describe the methodology. Was it well
chosen. Does it give the answers that author wanted to gain. Can you suggest
an alternative approach?
-
Results. Are they credible? Is the work repeatable? Signifigance. Has anybody
made credible claims contrary to the thesis after it was published. Can
you find references to the thesis in other people's work after the thesis
was published. Are the results taken as such or disputed? Credibility of
the contra-arguments.
-
Relevance. Your evaluation of the usefulness of the results of the thesis
so far and potential for the future.
-
Context of the thesis. Laboratory or institution where it was written,
how it fits into the research profile of the group.
