Summary

4 ECTS = about 12 lectures ja 3-5 exercises.
Schedule.
Lectures on Wednesdays in S4, lectures start on March 14th. Last lecture on April 25th.
Exercise lectures (first three, at least) on Mondays in F402/ee at 12-14, presence is not required but highly recommended.

All exercise reports are to be returned as indicated in the exercise document.
Final examination on May 9th from 9-12 at S3.
To qualify for grading, you'll have to give feedback on the course.

Goals of the course

Core knowledge

Knowledge presented in the list below describes the must know -level of this course. These are the things you should know to even successfully pass the course. Note, that some of these things you may very well know before the course.

Different types of measurements (passive & active) and other basic concepts relating to measurements.
IP/TCP/UDP-packet structure.
Legislation and Internet measurements
Aggregation, masks. Basic statistics, quantiles, means, variances, higher moments.
Basics of time-series analysis
Correlations (auto- and cross-), self-similarity, distributions and distribution parameters.
Flow, related definitions and concepts. Functional structure of a flow classifier.
Bandwidth, delay and packet loss measurements.
Measurement setups
Basics of routing, protocol and application measurements
Exercises 1-5.

Prerequisites

Prerequisite for the course is basic understanding of the operation of TCP/IP networks. Courses like S-38.188 and S-38.121 provide you with necessary and adequate background. Due to the analytical nature in this course you should have your basic knowledge of statistics and statistical analysis. Finally, minor scripting and programming skills (awk, perl, tcl, c) are required as well as experience on using mathematical tools in Matlab, for instance. Prerequisites are not checked, but to take the course succesfully requires solid knowledge of these topics.

Requirements to pass the course

To successfully pass the course the following requirments must be filled

All exercises must be passed.
The final examination must be passed.
You must fill out the course feedback form.

Lectures

Lectures are given in Finnish and all materials are in English. Lectures and exercises are held according to the schedule. Lectures are held in lecture hall S4 and exercises in various locations.

Lectures are held on wednesdays starting 14.03.2007, in lecture hall S4.

Exercises

This course has three to five compulsory exercises as indicated in the course schedule. Each and every one of them has to be passed in order to be able to pass the course. There will be strict deadlines indicated in the exercise documents. Follow them, no extensions will be granted and all reports returned after the deadline are automatically rejected. Exercise reports must be returned in PDF-format.

Exercises are held on mondays (for the first three exercises). Exercise sessions have two hour duration focusing on what is the obejctive of the exercise (not how to get there).

Final examination

A final examination needs to be taken to determine the course grade. The final exam has to be passed in order to pass the course. Exam is on wednesday May 9th 9-12 at lecture hall S3.

Course grading

To pass the course, one must have all exercises passed and graded. Exercises are graded either fail / pass / pass with distinction). Each exercise that is passed with distinction gives you 1 exercise point. These points are scaled and the scaled points may be used to replace the poorest answer in the final exam.

Course grade is based on exam result. There will be 5 questions to answer in the final exam. Scaled exercise points will replace points for the worst answer (assuming that exercise points are higher).

Exercise reports and exam answers may be in English in addition to official languages in Finland if you are not native speaker of either one.

Selected part of the course textbook draft dealing with the statistical mathematics needed during the course. Please note that the availability will be limited to hut.fi -domain and that the draft is copyrighted to Markus Peuhkuri, Marko Luoma and Mika Ilvesmäki.
Chapter 4 of the course textbook draft dealing with flow analysis.
Lecture slides to support the lectures.
Exercise material to aid in completing the exercise and to provide background information.
Scientific articles on measurement related issues

All materials are downloadable only from course web pages and only from .hut.fi / .tkk.fi domains. Note that printing with HUT printers is strictly forbidden.
