Note the change in the lecture schedule, there is no lecture on 18.2. and the last lecture takes place on 3.3.!

General: Course in Spring 2008 is given in Finnish, but the lecture material is in English.

Status:
In the new degree structure, the course is obligatory in the advanced study module on Optical communications. It is optional in the advanced study module on Wired communications systems and in the special module on Networking Technology.

In the old degree structure, the course is part of the Networking Technology major and is

obligatory in the Switching and Networking Technology path,
recommended in the Computer Networks path and
optional in the Protocols and Services path.

The course is also optional in the Networking Technology minor and in the Teletraffic Theory major and minor.

Objectives:
Topics covered by the course include

Switch fabric architectures and implementation alternatives
Multi-stage switch fabrics and their complexity, scalability and throughput
PDH and ATM switches, Gbit/s-routers and optical switching elements
Basics of WDM technology: static networks, wavelength and waveband routing as well as logically routed networks

Prerequisites: S-72.1130 Telecommunication Systems and S-38.2188 Computer networks.

Registration:
Obligatory registration is via Web-Topi. Please, follow also information in the news group opinnot.sahko.s-38.tietoverkkotekniikka.

Lectures:(6 hours a week)
Lectures are given on Mondays in E111 at 9-12 and on Wednesdays in E110 at 11-14, starting on 21.1.2008. The last lecture is on 3.3.2008. There is no lecture on 18.2.2008. Lecture material will be distributed as a compendium via Edita.

Exercises: (2 hours a week)
Exercises are held on Thursdays in E111 at 14-16. The first exercise is on 24.1.2008 and the last one on 28.2.2008. Active students can gain 0 - 6 exercise points, which are counted in determining the grade of an exam. The extra points are valid in exams arranged in the year 2008. Examination:
The first exam is on 7.3.2008. Two additional exams will be organised during the year 2008. Exams will be based on the material presented in the lectures and exercises in the spring 2008. Previous exams can be found in the exam archive.

An examination includes five questions and each of them gives 0 - 6 points. The grade of an exam is based on the points yielded from the exam and extra points yielded from the exercises.

Course completion:
To complete the course, one has to pass the examination.
