S-38.3133 TOPICS OF THE LABORATORY WORKS (2-5 ECTS)

It is recommended that you don't keep your lab files (reports, measurements etc.) on your web pages. Some people might just copy them and miss the learning process.
If you are studying course S-38.3115 Signalling protocols it is recommended to take laboratory work 1-DX-210 Introduction to the components used in telephone networks and 2- STN Introduction to the signalling used in telephone networks.
The final report of lab work 27 IPv4 Routing should follow the report model. This work is compulsory for ALL students and it is recommended to take as the first work, if possible.
The language of the reports is Finnish/Swedish for Finns or English for others. There are two exceptions namely 30-IPv6 Routing and 31-Multicast Routing I which must be written in ENGLISH.

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PRINT THE MATERIALS ON THIS WEB PAGE WITH --- TKK --- PRINTERS!!!

The laboratory works are as follows:

WorkDescriptionRemarksMaterial
1-DX-210Introduction to the components used in telephone networks (esp. telephone exchance). supports course S-38.3115 Signalling protocols Preliminary report (.pdf 49KB) | Work instructions and report questions (.pdf 80KB) | Check for background material, too
2-STNIntroduction to the signalling used in telephone networks (including Digital Subscriber Signalling 1 (DSS1) (2B+D) and SS7 Signalling). supports course S-38.3115 Signalling protocols Preliminary report (.pdf 43KB) | Work instructions and report questions (.pdf 104KB) | Check for background material, too
27-IPv4-RoutingConfiguring a test network by using RIP and OSPF. Tests will be made on how fast the network will become stable after some links have been cut off. RIP and OSPF are also compared with each other. Cisco's routers are used. Use REPORT model --- This lab is COMPULSORY FOR ALL!!! --- Take this work before work 30 Material (PDF 117KB) Check for background material, too
30-IPv6-RoutingA test network is addressed with IPv6 site local addresses and configured to work with RIP new generation protocol. Also stateless autoconfiguration will be tested with the routers and the Windows 2000 clients. Interworking between IPv4 and IPv6 parts of the network will be tried. - REPORTS IN ENGLISH!!!Take first work 27 Material (PDF 232KB) Check for background material, too
31-Multicast Routing IA network is established with XORP (eXtensible Open Router Platform) routers to analyze traffic information while PIM-SM (Independent Multicast- Sparse Mode) protocol is running. At first routers are configured as they are using static RP (Rendezvous Point). Then those with Bootstrap Router mechanism are configured. In order to test that the multicast delivery is working, conference software called Robust Audio Tool (RAT) will be used. - REPORTS IN ENGLISH!!!

32- SNMPSome network statistics of computers is gathered. Then a multicast tunnel is set up and its traffic will be studied. With a MRTG program a graphical interpretation of the traffic in the net is obtained. An Ethereal program is also used to capture some data and to understand basics of SNMP.

33-DNSA new domain is created with three name servers. First a normal domain with a sub domain is configured. Then some SSL features of name servers are used. Finally an interface of private and public network is configured with a name server which is tested with a couple of HTTP servers.
Material (PDF 53KB) Check for background material, too
36-SECURITYStudy network scanning, vulnerabilities, hacks and cracks. This study contains for example LINUX password cracking, search for keylogger and using a vulnerability in a certain program to gain administrator access to a remote computer. Also measures against intruders are studied.
Material (PDF 21KB) Check for background material, too
37-WLANDifferent modes of WLAN communication are tested in this work. This Study also includes working with security issues of WLAN communication, for example cracking of encryption of WLAN traffic. Ad-hoc routing will also be tested.
