Objective

The course is one of the core courses in the Networking Technology major and is also part of the Master's program in Communications Engineering, Network Engineering major. The objective of the course is to give students a strong background in signaling systems used in different networks. After successful completion of the course students will understand:

how networks inter-work
how calls or sessions can be set up, managed and released in different networks using different alternative methods that are typically found in networks
what are the auxiliary functions related to signaling and how do they work
what are the design constraints of signaling systems
the technology trend in signaling and call/session control
how switching system functionality is inherited into a packet network environment.

Prerequisites

S-72.1130 (S-72.423) Telecommunication Systems or corresponding knowledge. Also S38.2188 recommended.

General information

The course will be given in English.

Completion of the course

You are required to produce mindmaps on the lectures as follows: Mandatory: lectures 1 and 2. The rest at least 50% of the lectures. Mindmaps are returned by Tuesday at 23.59 the next week when the lectures took place (so, for example, if lectures were given on week 4, then the corresponding mindmaps should be returned on week 5). If you did not understands something in the lecture (material), write questions next to the mindmap. These questions will be addressed during the course.

Return mindmaps to the box marked with course code (outside wing G-2).

By creating and submitting more than the required mindmaps, you will earn additional points (max 2 points).

Exercises: you are required to complete 2 exercises. These will produce additional points towards the exam. (max 2 points)

Exam is mandatory (5 questions, max 30 points.)

NB: This year we have course lecture notes the first time. Feedback and debugging for the purpose of improving the lecture notes is solicited and will be rewarded by giving additional points.

Exercises

Two exercices: one on ENUM and the other on signaling efficiency. Scheduling and deadlines will be announced later.

If you do not have any hand-on experience on signaling, we strongly recommend that you do the signaling related lab works in the student Netlab. These belong to a separte course. Mandatory starting lecture in on Jan 22. For more info see: http://www.netlab.tkk.fi/opetus/s383133/.
