Quality of Service in Internet - Period 2/2005
4 ECTS = about 20 hours lectures ja 6 exercises.
Summary
- Lectures on Thursdays in S3, lectures start on November
3th. Last lecture on December 8th.
- Exercises on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Maari-C, presence
not required but highly recommended.
- Enroll to course and exercises via topi (not yet open as topi
administration has not updated courses) to receive
last-minute updates by email.
- All exercise reports must be returned on December xxth by 4pm. We suggest
you return the exercise reports before the next exercise begins.
- Final examination on December 14th from 9-12 at S2.
Prequisites
Prequisite for the course is basic understanding of the operation of
TCP/IP networks. Courses like S-38.188
and S-38.121 provide you with necessary
and adequate background. The study guide states those as
prerequisites. It is not checked if you have taken those courses, but
at course solid knowledge is assumed.

Lectures
Lectures are given in Finnish and all materials are in
English. Lectures and exercises are held according to the schedule. Lectures are held in lecture hall
S3 and exercises in room Maari-C.
Lecture days, Thursdays starting from 2004-11-03, are divided into
two sessions. Morning session starts on 9AM and lasts for two hours
and the afternoon session starts at noon and ends at 2PM.
Exercises
This course has six exercises as indicated in the course schedule. Each of them has to be
passed in order to be able to pass the course. We recommend that you
return the exercise report before the next exercise. This gives you
one week's time to complete the exercise. The hard deadline
for all exercise reports is December xx at 4PM All reports
returned after the hard deadline are automatically rejected. The due
date is strictly observed. Exercise reports must be returned either in
PDF-format or in paper format.
Exercises are held XXXXX. Exercise sessions have two hour
introduction to the exercise setting and questions related to the
subject.
You must also have an account for ST-department workstation class. You can
verify this by loggin in to moukari.ee.hut.fi with your CC
unix password. If your account is not active, send email
including your user id, name and student id.
Final examination
A final examination has to be taken to determine your course grade.
Exam is on 2005-12-14 9-12 S2.
Course grading
To pass the course, one must have minimum number of points from the
exam and must have accepted grade for each exercise
report (exercises are graded either fail / pass or fail /
statisfactory / good / excellent). Exercise points are summed up and
scaled between 1 to 6 (if all passed).
Course grade is based on exam result. There will be 6 questions (2
for each lecturer, maximum 6 points each) in exam and you must select
5 of those which to answer. Exercise points will replace points for
worst answer (assuming that exercise points are higher).
Exercise reports and exam answers may be in English in addition to
official languages in Finland if you are not native speaker of either
of one.

- The course textbook "Internet Quality of Service: Architectures
and Mechanisms " by Zheng Wang (ISBN: 1-55860-608-4)
- Lecture slides to support the lectures (these are NOT to be taken
as a standalone material or as a replacement for the book).
- Exercise material to aid in completing the exercise and to provide
background information
- A selected set of related journal and conference papers and
articles
All extra material will be
- Delivered by Edita Prima Opetusmonisteet
- Available near course noticeboard (one copy for self-copying, if
stolen not replaced)
- Downloadable from course web pages. Note that printing
with HUT printer is strictly forbidden.
