S-38.121 Routing in Communication Networks (2 cr)

Fall 2004

Additional information about the bonus exercise

In this exercise you should use your creativity to develop new scenarios and applications based on ad hoc networks. The exercise is divided into two phases: In the first phase you should create a new scenario/application. In the second phase, you select three of the scenarios developed in the first phase, and develop them further by commenting and proposing improvements.

First phase

Look at the sample scenarios that already are available in WIKI – this gives you an idea of what is expected from a scenario description. Create a new scenario where an ad hoc network can be utilized. You may use the special property that no infrastructure is required – all intelligence is in the terminal. However, you don’t need to pay too much attention to the actual limitations (e.g. bandwidth, cost) in this phase. Be creative!

Second phase

Select three scenarios and read them. Evaluate and comment them. For example, what are their advantages, problems, limitations, feasibility and possibilities? Can you improve or enhance them?

Grading

In the grading of the exercise, activity is rewarded. There are no correct and wrong answers. You get about one exam point by doing the required work: developing one scenario and commenting on three scenarios. The scenario should be described adequately. You can get an additional point by showing exceptional activity, for example by actively discussing on the WIKI page about scenarios or developing additional scenarios. These points are bonus points, i.e. they are not part of the normal exercise points. Thus, this bonus exercise together with the normal exercises allows you to get up to +6 points that are added to the exam points!

If you work in a group (which is recommended), submit the list of members of your group to the assistant, so that everyone gets the points.

Schedule

The deadline for the second phase is 14.11.2004 at 24:00. Although the deadline for the first phase is 27.10.2004, you can still continue work of the first phase. The main aim of the first deadline is coordinate the submissions so that the scenarios are available when the second phase starts. All evaluation is made after the deadline of the second phase.

WIKI

WIKI is an online collaboration tool that allows you to edit web-pages through a normal browser. You submit and comment scenarios using WIKI. You are also allowed to submit your scenarios on paper.

Your user account in WIKI is formed from the e-mail address that you have in TOPI. The account name is the part of your address before the @-character plus “@mobileman.supsi.ch”. For example, if you have a non-HUT address in TOPI my.name@company.com, then you get the account my.name@mobileman.supsi.ch. Accounts have been created for students that have registered to the exercises. If your account is missing, please contact claudia.brazzola@supsi.ch. Click on the "WIKIMobileMAN" link to log in and edit pages.

Questionnaire

After doing the bonus exercise, you should fill the questionnaire. The questionnaire is available in pdf-format and in word-format. You can edit the word document and submit it to claudia.brazzola@supsi.ch by e-mail, or you can leave questionnaire to the course mail-box in the corridor.
