2.7 Real-time Services (MM)

Most of the real-time services are based on concept of delivering most of the needed information to the other end. For example, when streaming audio through the network it is enough to receive most of data. If the quality lacks a bit it still doens't interfere understanding the music or the speaker. This highly differs with file transfer, for example, because one wrongly received or lost bit might broke the whole file.

Of course, creating real-time services is not straight forward. Problems appearing in the wireless networks, like the lack of bandwidth and mobility issues, need to be carefully considered. Plain speech transfer doens't need much of the bandwidth, but streamed high fidelity audio consumes hundreds of kilobits in a second.
