S-38.115 - Lecture quiz

Spring 2005

What is a quiz?

Lecture quizzes are web-based tick-a-box -type of questionnaires. Each lecture has its own quiz consisting of 5-10 questions which are based on the lecture slides. The quiz is published on the day when the lecture is given and the deadline is one week after the publication. Please check this page regularly to see if there are any changes in the quiz schedule.

All quizzes are mandatory. The quizzes do not give you extra points to the exam but you cannot attend the exam without passing the quizzes. Note that the questions change for every round. The grading policy is explained in prof. Kantola's slide. In practice, if you get 90% of the answers correct, you pass the quiz.

In case of problems

Technical and administrative issues regarding the quizzes are handled by Piia Töyrylä (piia@netlab.hut.fi). Please contact her if you notice the quiz system behaving strangely or if you have difficulties in logging in to the system etc.

The quiz questions are made by prof. Kantola. Please contact him (preferably in the lectures or during the office hour) if you want to ask about the questions or the quiz/lecture topics. Prof. Kantola also decides about the quiz grading.

How to do the quiz

It is recommended to do the quiz earlier than in the last minute before the deadline. If you notice in good time that there is something in the questions or lecture slides that you do not understand, you still have a chance to ask about those things in the lecture.

Please follow these instructions:

  1. Before starting the quiz, browse through the lecture slides so that you get a general idea about the topics covered in the slides.
  2. Type your student number into the box and select the correct quiz from the drop-down list.
  3. Read the questions carefully before answering them.
  4. When you are ready with the quiz, press the submit button. You will see your score and your answers compared to the correct answers.
  5. Do not go back from the answer page to the question page and submit your answers again! If you do, your new result will not be recorded correctly and it has to be discarded. Use the link at the bottom of the page to return to the quiz main page and start the quiz from the beginning.
  6. Note: In the first round (opened on the lecture day) you have three attempts but in the second round you have only two attempts.

Just taking a look at the questions and then leaving the question page by pressing the back button or closing the window etc. without sending the answers does not affect on the number of attempts that you have left. Only if you leave the question page by pressing the submit button, you lose one attempt. If you are unsure about how many attempts you still have left, you can order a result email.

How to read the answer page

Unfortunately, due to the format of the questions (true/false) the answer page is not the most clearest one to read. The columns in the page are in the following order:

  • Possible answers (in most questions true and false)
  • Question (bolded)
  • Correct answer for each possible answer
  • Your answer for each possible answer (if you ticked the box this is true, if you left the box blank this is false)
  • Points from each possible answer (if the correct answer and your answer are the same, you should get +1 point)
  • An example if you answer true:

The course code of this course is S-38.115.
    True TRUE TRUE +1
    False FALSE FALSE +1

An example if you answer false:

The course code of this course is S-38.115.
    True TRUE FALSE 0
    False FALSE TRUE 0

    Quiz

Remember to read the instructions "How to do the quiz" and "How to read the answer page" first!
Note! In the first round you have three attempts but in the second round you have only two attempts. In quizzes opened in April you have 5 attempts in the first round, since there is no second round.
