Exam results 30.8.2005

A couple of notes about the answers and grading:

Question 1: Many answers were long but they lacked accuracy. The correct answer is presented in the lecture slide 1-19, Private vs. Public telephone networks.

Question 2: In this question the students were asked to :

  1. define the purpose of MTP
  2. define the applicability of MTP
  3. describe MTP's main capabilities in terms of reliability
  4. describe MTP's main capabilities in terms of scope of communications
The functionality or structure of the protocol stack was not asked. Also the details of all different fields in headers were not asked. Points were given if the student was able to describe:
  1. what MTP is used for and in what kinds of networks and between which network elements.
  2. which components build the reliability in MTP-network and how. (Quite detailed and specific description was required)
  3. which components define the scope of communications in an MTP-network. (Role of ETSI, ANSI, country and operator MTP networks, STPs)

Question 4: The question was about the operational model of the Diameter protocol. This is not the same as the overall Diameter architecture found in the lecture slide 12-65. Many students had drawn a picture of the overall architecture and explained the features of Diameter and other general things, but this kind of answer did not give good points. The correct answer was expected to include a clear and accurate enough picture of the operational model (slide 12-69) and a decent enough explanation of the components and their relationships.

Grade limits
------------
Passing the exam requires 12 exam points (exercise points do not
help in passing the exam). The grades are given based on total points
(exam+exercises).
