The most important event of the week

Even the newest text book is already partly out of date on the day it is printed, and the only way to keep up with the world is to read newspapers and other sources of fresh information. The aim of this year's homework is to encourage you to keep your eyes open and get a grasp of what is going on in the world of telecommunications right now.

Your job is to read newspapers, magazines etc. during at least six weeks. Based on your reading, choose the most important event of each week and write a short magazine article on the event. The event can be a technical breakthrough or even a political or economical event, as long as you can justify its importance in the telecommunications field during the week in question.

The article should include your reasons for choosing the event and references to the material you have read, eg. like this: [Helsingin Sanomat 16.1.2001, page 35]. Each of the six articles should be at least a half A4 page long.

The homework is to be returned to the course box, which is situated below the notice board in the G-wing. The box is marked with the text "S-38.105". All six articles should be returned together. The returning date is 11.3.2002.

The homework has to be typed, not hand written. On the cover page you should write

course code and name,

your name, student ID number and email address,

and date.

By doing the optional homework you can get up to 2 (3?) extra points that are added to your exam total. In practice this usually means your grade will be one higher. Here's an example work that fulfills the minimum requirements of the homework: 105malli.pdf.

Note: Copy-pasting any material directly to your work is not allowed and considered to be plagiarism. Write everything you have to say in your own words, and use independent thinking. Remember also that this is an individual assignment, not a pair or group work.
