General

This is a new core course targeted to Telecom Management students. The course gives insight to the business dynamics of networks and services. Network-related value nets are handled from the viewpoints of different players. Theory is clarified with case examples.

Suitability

Participants should have good prior knowledge on networking technology (e.g. S-38.188 - Computer Networks) and general economics (e.g. TU-22.101 - Introduction to Industrial Management). The number of participants is max 50. First priority goes to Telecom Management students (S-38 major, minor, and graduate).

Lectures

Lectures are held in English language on Wednesdays at 8:15-10:00 in hall S2.

Exercises

A voluntary but useful exercise will be arranged in a form of a mobile operator business game (MOB) session at the end of April. The registration to the mobile operator business game was closed on Sunday March 7 at 24:00. Questions about the business game can be asked by email to Mathias Tallberg.
The dates for the mobile operator business game sessions are: The mobile operator business game will consist of a short preliminary exercise (1/ group), the actual business game session, and a short final report (individual). The game sessions will be held in the computer classrooms F401 and F402 at the Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering. There will be a lunch break at approximately 12:00-13:00 during each session.
The teams for the mobile operator business can be found here.
The player instructions for MOB can be found here.
The preliminary exercise can be found here.
The deadline for the preliminary report is on Sunday April 18 at 24:00 (for all the sessions). The material needed to complete the preliminary report will be published no later than on April 7 at 24:00.
The exercise paper for the final report can be found here.

Completion

The completion of the course requires an acceptable performance in the exam. Active participation to the voluntary business game session helps in the exam by substituting one exam question. There will be 5 questions a 6 points, yielding max 30 points. However, substitution points cannot turn an unacceptable exam result to an acceptable one. The substitution points received from the MOB game will be valid in all the exams held before the start of next years Networking Business course.
The first exam will be held on Wednesday May 5 at 9:00-12:00 in hall S4.
The second exam will be held on Tuesday August 31 at 9:00-12:00 in hall S1.
There will be no summer exam for the Networking Business course. After the exam in May, the next exam will be held in the beginning of next semester, presumably in September.
The results from the first exam (05.05.2004) can be found here.
The results from the first exam (31.08.2004) can be found here.
