General course information

The purpose of the series is to raise the awareness of our students of the innovation opportunities open to them in the fascinating world of telecommunications and related areas. At the same time this is an opportunity to encourage the discussion on the direction of technology change between the industry and the academia.  Telecom Forum is now organized for the second time. Last year's series was the event of the Autumn term and reached an audience of some 200 listeners approximately half of whom were post-graduate and under graduate students of HUT as well as some other Universities such as the Helsinki School of Economics and the other half of whom were people working in the Industry in technology direction and research. Last year's Speakers included  Dr. Matti Alahuhta - President of Nokia Telecommunications, Matti Aura - Minister of Transportation and Communications, Jukka Alho - Vice President of the Helsinki Telephone Company, Lauri Melamies - Vice President of Nokia Telecommunications, Matti Makkonen - Vice President of Sonera (Telecom Finland) and Kristian Toivo - Vice President of LM Ericsson in Finland.

Contents fall 1998:

Star guest speakers will cover various hot issues in telecommunications. The topics of this year range from broadband access to  European telecommunications law, from the future of the PSTN/ISDN  to the 3rd generation mobile communications. Both the business and the technology perspective will be present. The lectures start from the basics,  so no prior knowledge of telecommunications technology is required. The lectures are free and open to all interested.

Prerequisites

• Telecom Forum is a Studia Generalia, so no prior knowledge of telecommunications technology required.

Enrolling

• Students from HUT: Obligatory enrolling for those wanting to get credits from  the course is through WWW-TOPI. Here is also a direct link.  If you only want to listen to the lectures no enrolling is necessary.

• Students from other universties than HUT: If you want to complete the course or a part of it please contact Raija-Liisa Karhu, tel. 09-451 5323.  The enrolling fee is free if your university if you can enroll via the JOO form which is for universities who has an agreement with HUT. For students from other universities the fee is around 200 mk/credit.  All questions are to be directed to Raija-Liisa Karhu.

Everyone enrolled on the course through www-topi was automatically added to the list. Others should subscribe by sending e-mail to majordomo@keskus.hut.fi no subject, no signature, only subscribe telecomforum in the body of the message.

Passing the course

• 1 cr.: attend 9 of the lectures and do homeworks
• 3 cr.: previous + literature exam
• exam can be substituted with a summary/referate

Homework

Homework description:
The homework is to sum up the contents of each  lecture into two questions and answering them. The questions should measure  deep understanding of the subject, but answering them should not require any other information on the subject than that presented in the lectures. Answers should be no longer than 100 to 200 words per question.
Return of homeworks:
The homework of each lecture is to be returned before the next seminar session via e-mail in ASCII format in the body of the message (no attachments) to the address Stefan.Werner@hut.fi and only to this address. Sending homework to some other address in our lab (to the course assistant or professor) could  end up in your message going to the bit heaven. The subject of the message should be "Homework X", where X stands for the session number. Remember to include your name, your student number and session number in the beginning of the message as well.

Timetable and location

Sessions are held on Wednesdays 17:15 - 19:00 in the lecture hall S4 on the second floor of Electrical and Communications Engineering Department of Helsinki University of Technology in the address Otakaari 5A. From Helsinki city center Kamppi bus terminal bus 102 takes about 15 minutes to the door of the department.

Grading and exam

Important info: Exam registration can now be done through TOPI. Students without account can register by the course information board!!

• The grades given in the course is pass / not pass
• The first exam will be held on Thursday 7.1 1999, 9-12, in Hall S4.
• Second occasion for the exam Thursday 20.5 1999, 13-16, in Hall S4.
• Deadline for summary/referate will be Friday 15.1, 1999.

 

The exam can also be passed by writing a summary/referate of one of the these books
