Telecommunications Forum - Fall 2000 - Multicast/Mbone

Info on the multicast feed of the Telecom Forum 2000 to the MBone

This fall (2000) the lectures will be available thru the efforts of our laboratory, FUNET and by the Star Meteorfilm Inc. The lectures are not recorded so your only option is to tune into MBone at times of the sending (lecture times). There might be a possibility to download the sessions in poor-quality .avi files sometime after the session, but this service is not guaranteed and you should not rely for such a service / files to appear. Therefore, once more, the lectures are not recorded so your only option is to tune into MBone at times of the sending (lecture times).

The service is as guaranteed as anything is in the Internet. Therefore NOTHING is guaranteed for each and every lecture, but is always depending whether our local network/MBone/your local network has the capacity and/or equipment to take care of the broadcast. So don't bet your Life on this. Below, we'll provide a simplified procedure on how to install and view the feed with vic- and vat-software. The feed is intended to be watched and listened to with vic- and vat- program packages (for video and audio respectively) that are available for almost all imaginable environments. In case you are not sure how to proceed please refer to your organization's IT-services on how to find, install and configure these programs. You'd be amazaed how simple it is so don't be afraid.

Please, note also, that not all ISPs (yours may be included) support the relay of mulitcast packets. So if you are unable to receive the audio/video feed we regret and suggest that you turn to your organization IT-personnel.

To install vic (for video) and vat (for audio), and start viewing the the feed please follow the following steps:

  1. Install both vic and vat to your system
  2. Start the programs in the following way

vic multicast address and port for the lecture on Sept. 27th to be announced just before the lecture

    and

vat multicast address and port for the lecture on Sept. 27th to be announced just before the lecture

In vic, click the picture to get it slightly larger. Adjust the picture size from the controls. In vat, use the controls to adjust the voice level.

We will aim to provide a method for you to ask questions from the presentors on-line, however, this will be provided only later on during the autumn lectures. All commentary on the reception quality and other technical comments may be sent to Laboratory Multicaster

Good luck, and happy multicasting!!

Please note, that the laboratory of Telecommunications Technology is not able to provide any assitance besides this web-page. However, all commentary is more than welcome, please send your comments to. The personnel involved with the S - 38.001 does not actually own up to any degree of expertise in multicast technology, and we've exhausted our knowledge on the system in just writing this guide. You are welcome to send questions, of course, regarding technical difficulties but  the answers will most propably be rather vague...
