S-38.001 Telecommunications Forum (1-3 cr) LV

Passing the course

There are two versions to pass this course. You can take it for 1 credit or (2-3) credits. The requirements for each of these versions are detailed below. In order to succesfully complete the course, you need to have minimum of 8 returned and accepted homeworks out of 10.

The literature examination (in the 3 cr. version) can be substituted with a summary. (More info below)

On the examination (The grading is passed/failed.)

The examination (2-3 cr) The book " Telecommunications Convergence" is the basis for the literature examination. All chapters are included.
Here you will find guidance and a list of possible questions on the subjects, to help with the studying. The examination consists of two to three questions and an evaluation of the book as a whole. The view is semi-technical. You are expected to show in your evaluation that you really understand the subject matter and are able to formulate arguments about the subject and justify them. You are expected to know and understand more than is said in the book. One sure way to fail is to agree with the author on everything.

On the summary(The grading is passed/failed.)

You can substitute the examination with a written summary. This summary will distill the basic message, ideology and basic concepts of the source-book into a 10-20 pages (covers, appendixes, indexes not included)  of written report. A good summary will display deep understanding of the subject matter, a good control of the English language and will not be a "copy-paste" version of some chapters of the book. The deadline of the Summary is 22th of February 2001 at 16:00. The format of the summary is an envelope that contains both a printed out version and a 3.5" PC-disk containing the referate in Microsoft Word- format.

Summary will be returned by dropping it into cubical "post boxes" adjacent to the Information Board of the Course. The information Board can be found opposite the Laboratory of Telecommunications technology.

Students outside greater Helsinki area may return their summaries via mail. The address is:

Klaus Nieminen / Telecom Forum
Lab. of Telecommunications Technology
P.O. Box 3000
FIN-02015 HUT

You may select one of three books to be the source for your summary:

On selecting between summary and the examination

If you wish to come out of the course with a more "Studia Generalia"- kind of experience, the summary is the recommended method of meeting the requirements (3 cr).

If you wish to have more of an "hands on"- experience, maybe with some added technical know-how, the Examination is recommended (3 cr).
