The area covers both circuit and packet switching technology - i.e. both traditional telecommunications networks and the Internet and other packet networks. In our teaching we cover the system aspects related to switching such as signalling in telecommunications networks, routing in circuit and packet switched networks, Internet routing protocols, interworking of networks and services, fault-tolerance techniques, switching matrix technology and telecommunications product development. Recent developments in this area are covergence of the networking technologies, tremendous growth of the Internet and Mobile networks.
