Netlab guidelines for preparing your Master thesis are available on this site. A methodical
booklet is also available.
What comes to the procedure of working with me, please take
note
of my expectations:
- In the first meeting with me on the topic of the thesis, please
show me the Report on the Special Assignment on Networking Technology,
you have completed.
- When you are starting your work on your thesis the first goal is
to define
what it is all about. For this purpose, your first task is to write a
plan
of the thesis. This may consist of the title, the introduction and a
draft
outline of contents. The introduction will give the definition of the research
problem, motivation of the thesis, an idea of the methodology
and the story
line. This you must agree with me.
-
When you want my comments on any versions of your work, bring or send
the
work to me on paper. When I have read your work, I will want to
send my comments using e-mail. Therefore, write your e-mail address
on preliminary versions, you give to me.
- If your topic requires particular maturity or the method you use to solve your problem is formulated by yourself
(even by combining existing methods) it is generally a good idea to
come to talk to me when you are half done. This may save you
considerable trouble at the end of your work.
-
Never harass me with your special needs in terms of your busy schedule.
We
are all busy and try to do our best. If you have been unable to finish
your own work in time to meet your own busy timetable, please do not
annoy
others by making it other people's problem! Particularly mine.
When you think you are close to the final line, take note of the
following
procedure:
-
Send your draft of your thesis to me (paper version!) with your
e-mail and postal address attached
-
Having read the draft, I will tell how to proceed by e-mail, in
particular:
-
What corrections are necessary, some of these may be written some may
be
oral. Usually a face to face meeting is necessary even if you happen to
live outside Finland.
-
Whether I need to read the second, etc draft or having done the
corrections you can submit the final
version.
-
When you can wrap it up and give me the final version.
-
When you will need to make a presentation on your thesis, usually this
will be based on the final version of the thesis. Please, agree the
exact date
with the lab secretary.
-
When I have seen the final version in black covers, I will write the
resume and grade the
thesis.
-
The degree committee (more than a week off from the resume) will
confirm
the final grade.
Instructions for preparing the seminar
presentation
are here in Finnish and in English.
