COST 279, the latest in a series of COST Actions, is titled "Analysis and Design of Advanced Multiservice Networks supporting Mobility, Multimedia and Internetworking". It is a 4 year project that started in June 2001. The COST Actions on traffic theory began in the mid 80's with COST 214, which was followed by COST 224, COST 242 and COST 257. COST 279 has participants from most of Europe's leading universities and research institutes.

COST 279 Research in Finland

The Finnish contribution to the international COST 279 is mainly carried out in a domestic research project with the same name. This is a joint project between VTT Information Technology and the Networking Laboratory of the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT). This project started in the beginning of 2001 and its administration is coordinated by VTT. The project is funded by Tekes and three industrial partners:

• Nokia Research Center,
• Elisa and
• Radiolinja (since 2002).

• Internet topology (VTT)
• Traffic Engineering in IP networks (HUT)
• QoS mechanisms for the Internet (HUT)
• Queueing theory for fractal traffic (VTT)
• GPRS and other traffic measurements (VTT)
• Multicast in mobile communications systems (HUT)
