S-38.148 Simulation of Data Networks (2 ov)

Status of the course: The course is mandatory for all those who are majoring/minoring in teletraffic theory. Additionally, the course is well suited as an introduction into simulation techniques for anyone interested in the performance analysis of communications systems.

Note ! The lectures and exercises will be given in Finnish. However, all the course material (overhead material from the lectures and exercises) will be available in English. Thus it is possible to take the course even without perfect Finnish skills.

Note ! Due to space limitations in the computer class room we may have to restrict the number of students who can simultaneously take the course !

Aim of the course: The aim is to provide the students with information on the proper use of simulation techniques, construction of simulation models, the fundamental theory of simulation methods, statistical analysis of the data and the construction of simulation programs. Additionally information is given on some freeware simulation tools.

Prerequisites: The course S-38.145 Introduction to Teletraffic Theory is recommended as prerequisite information. To be able to complete the home assignments, good working knowledge of the C programming language is mandatory, knowledge of C++ is recommended.

Lectures: The course contains 12 lectures and they are held on Tuesdays at 12-14 in room H302 or the computer class room B215 at the Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering. First lecture is given on September 14 in room H302. A preliminary schedule can be found here.

Exercises: The course also contains exercises (part 1, 4 times) and mandatory home assignments (parts 2 and 3). The exercises are held on Wednesdays at 13-14 in room H302 in Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering. The first exercise class will be held on September 29. Information on the home assignments will be provided later.
