Network management can be divided into five functional areas; fault, accounting, configuration, performance and security management.
Knowledge of all five areas is needed, in order to successfully accomplish network management.
Requirements and benefits of these five areas are described in the
general part of the thesis. Also, problems and possible solutions in
implementing these areas are described. The general part also includes
a description of SNMP-protocol for management of TCP/IP-networks
and its use in network management.
Tools, i.e. software that can be used in network management, are described in the specific part of the thesis, along with examples of how to use them. The specific part also describes the implementation that has been done at Helsinki University of Technology for management and
control of the TCP/IP-network.
The result of this thesis is the network management system at Helsinki University of Technology. It also provides a good platform for further development at the university.
